The Story, Briefly

Enterprise visits a planet which affected by deadly radiation, but they observe an opposing situation. A magic plant throws spores to habitants, spores make them healthy and make them dependent to the planet. Even they refuse to leave for reasonable purposes. Captain develops an immunity toward this plant and recover his crew.

Name of the episode:

We see a different side of the Paradise, which might be a boring or even a restricting place.

Thoughts

I only think about captains recovery method, captain recovered from the spores’ effect after opening his medals, he develops strong emotions to leave the ship. Then captain understand that the strong emotions of human can end an eden.

This message is actually parallel to what Vulcans do, they supress their emotions to live with peace. So even in a symbolic dimension, we see the side of the human which contradicts with peace.

In this episode, the plant give an eternal life in the cost of loyalty to the planet. As Kirk saw it wasn’t a Paradise but a Parasite. So we didn’t see it whether it’s purely parasite and harmful situation but a dream world. But with a hunch, it seem unnatural for an eden to prevent human curiosity, by locking them in a place.

I looked to the terms of eden and paradise in more detail, Eden is a garden of humanity’s beginnings, paradise is the perfect existence an ideal world. So they may be multiple instances of eden to reach a paradisic future. Worth thinking!

Special Notes

Dear Captain’s Log readers; Special Notes is a new concept, I’m asking my wife about her opinions about the episode. Here’s a few musings of what she considered about this episode;

I wonder about the notion of importance of the “duty”. (As a duty-oriented person, too.) Enterprise crew always puts duty in the first order, even when they see the opportunity to have the eden, they prefer futy, is it because they prioritize duty, or is it a fake eden, or even cannot humans do without a challenge? Lots of open questions… when humanity rejects eden (or edenlike opportunities) possibilities, so they not believe it’s possible.
We even like Spock, when he behave emotionally, when he laughed. Is this an example of antropomorhism or do we prioritize passionate persons?
